ABOUT CHICHEN ITZA, MEXICO

Come to Mexico and visit Chichen Itza, the impressive archaeological Mayan site located close to Cancun and Merida, Yucatan's capital city. During its golden years, Chichen Itza was the most important political, economic and religious centre for the Maya civilization. This important city was the major site of the Postclassical Maya. It is a place plenty of mystery, magic, and power that, through centuries after its decline is still considered as a holy place. Monumental architecture marks the center of a city that in its day covered more than 25 sq. km. Settlers appeared in the area as early as 300 B.C., but not until 750 A.D. is there evidence of urban planning. By 900 A.D. and under the Itzá Maya, Chichén is a thriving metropolis of 50,000 souls governed by a ruling junta composed of the nobility, and the priest, warrior and merchant castes (unlike the Classic Maya who were ruled by dynasties). Building stopped in 1100 A.D. and the city was abandoned by 1250 A.D., no one knows why. Chichén is a mix beteween Toltec and Maya styles. The major structures are within walking distance from each other and what you’ll be seeing is the city’s ceremonial center.

THE NATURAL WORLD

The Yucatan Peninsulan is basically a slab of limestone dividing the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea. It has few lakes, no rivers, and is honeycombed with caves and the sinkholes called "cenotes". This relentlessly flat landscape is carpeted in green, a medium-height tropical forest that is home to a variety of wildlife, some species so beautiful that will take your breath away: Ocelot, puma, jaguar, white-tailed deer, spider monkey, coatimundi, agouti, peccary, armadillo and iguana are all native to the area, but birds are the Yucatan’s real glory. Over 475 species of birds have been recorded in the Yucatan Peninsula, more than are found in Canada and the U.S. combined. With a little effort, you can spot woodpeckers, doves, quail, orioles, turquoise-browed mot-mots, hummingbirds, "chachalacas", white-fronted parrots and even a keel-billed toucan. With patience, you’ll see much more. The gardens at Mayaland are a sanctuary for regional wildlife, especially birds that feed and nest in its trees and shrubs.
